Christmas is over, classes have begun again, and I'm finding myself with even less time to have fun and relax than I had over the break. I've already gotten homework assignments and papers to start, and in a couple of weeks I'll start having exams and quizzes to study for.
Amidst the chaos that is college, I've decided to make some time for myself each day and do something creative. I might draw something here or there, but for the most part I'll be writing.
I've always loved writing, and I've always had a talent for it. I've been published as a winner in several contests, and people have always told me they enjoy my work. I believe this is because I enjoy it as well.
One of my favorite pastimes is sitting on my bed with a good book. Even when I was a little kid, my parents used to ground me by not letting me read. It was a very rare circumstance if I didn't have a book in my hand, no matter where I went. Nowadays, I don't carry books as much, simply because I have dozens of eBooks stored on my phone that I can read any time I want. But the principle remains the same: I love to read.
I've heard quotes from famous authors (Stephen King is one memorable one) saying that to be good at writing, all you need to do is be good at reading. I really think this is true. If you read a lot, you will naturally learn what makes a "good" book versus a "bad" one. Reading expands your vocabulary, as well as teaching you proper punctuation, grammar and spelling. When you know what kinds of books you like to read, you also are learning what kinds of books other people like to read.
Unfortunately, deviantArt is really annoying when trying to post stories. It's mostly made for visual arts, so the interface for reading and writing is a sort of secondary feature that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. So to facilitate my writing, I made a blog on WordPress.com. If you enjoy my work, you can check it out here:
I will likely continue to post stories here on deviantArt, but there will be more on my new blog since deviantArt's interface annoys me to no end. I've already posted my first story, which is a short story that I wrote several years ago. It won an award and was published in a young writers' anthology in my hometown. So check it out! Let me know if you enjoy it or hate it. I love to get feedback from my audience, so feel free to comment on it.
